Risnjak
National Park, which holds centuries-old forests of our
country, is in the immediate nearness of the sea, and its
surface equals 3 014 hectares. The park also includes the
central part of the Risnjak complex, which stretches from
the spring of Kupa to Gornje Jelenje (Upper Jelenje) and
from Crni Lug to Snjeznik. Veliki Risnjak (the Great
Risnjak) is the highest peak (1 528 metres). The rugged
cliffs of Mali Risnjak (the Small Risnjak) are as sheer as
walls, while Bijele stijene (the White Cliffs), with their
bare sheer rocks, represent the most beautiful mountain
reef in the park. An exquisite ornament of the park is
edelweiss, a symbol of mountains and every mountaineer’s
favourite flower.
The
animal world is also divers: black bear, chamois, deer,
fawn, boar, lynx and other animals bring life into the
dark forests of Risnjak. Seeing an eagle circle around the
top of Risnjak is an unforgettable experience. The main
entrance to Risnjak National Park is Crni Lug (the Black
Grove), situated near Delnice, which is a spot typical for
Gorski kotar, placed in picturesque scenery of green
meadows among coniferous forests.
