Gorski
kotar is an elevated area in the south-western part of
Mountain Croatia. It is made up of several smaller units of
specific geographical features. They are the centrals (Delnice
corridor), Risnjak-Snjeznik mountain block, the valley of
Cabranka and Kupa, the transitive area of Severin and the
Great Kapela mountain block. The average heights of Gorski
kotar range from 700 to 800 metres, while individual mountains
rise up above 1500 metres (Bjelolasica, Risnjak, Snjeznik).
The largest rivers – Kupa, Dobra and Cabranka – flow along the
brink and their valleys are in deep contrast to neighbouring
higher areas. This wide table-land which, apart from steep
peaks, also abunds in grasslands, plains, three lakes
(Lokvarsko, Bajer, Lepenica), presents a kingdom of quietness
that still reigns in these parts. The centuries-old tradition
of highland life-style is preserved in villages and
settlements (Delnice, Lokve, Fuzine, Cabar, Ravna Gora,
Vrbovsko, Mrkopalj, Skrad, Brod Moravice). Also, if you visit
even the smallest corner of Gorski kotar, this green heart of
our beautiful country, you will witness the unique, nowhere
else to be seen sceneries.
Fuzine,
a mountain place closest to the sea, one may also enjoy
swimming and fishing on two lakes, Lepenica and Bajer, or
visit cave Vrelo. "Small Postojna" as it is often called, it
is about 300 metres long with a walking track that enables
both children and the elderly to come see it. Travelling
further towards Zagreb, you will come across Kamacnik, a small
river 3 km long – 3 km of beautiful, untouched nature, canyons
with extremely impressive sceneries merging into the
quaintness of crystal clear water, and rapids flowing through
canyons: a harmony of incredible beauty, quiet and undisturbed
serenity. |
