East Croatia is a part of the country located
between Hungary and Bosnia and Herzegovina by the banks of Dunabe.
This part of Croatia is called Slavonia. It has long history of
inhabitance since pre historic period, and there are many remnants
from neolitic village Vučedol near Vukovar proving the excistance
of life in that period. Among arheological finds the Vučedol
hen-pigeon is specialy interesting, and it became the symbol of
Vukovar in the 1990-ies.
Agriculture is traditionaly the main activity
of population in Slavonia, and such way of living binds numerous
celebration and customs respecting the natural rytham of works in
the fields. On the west part there are towns Pakrac, Daruvar and
Lipik, and during the Roman rule period the thermal wells were
known. Region of Kutjevo is well known by its wine products.
Slavonia is a region full of numerous castles, summer residences
and chapels, which belonged to rich families. There is a castle
built in baroque and classicist style in Virovitica. In Našice
there is a beautiful park with the castle located in the centre of
the park which belonged to Pejačević family. Some of the
Slavonia's castles have origins from renovated forts, example is
the castle in Valpovo which still has the defensive tower from
middle ages. Upstream of the river Danube there is a pitaresque
castle built in English style in Donji Miholjac. The thermal well
was found in Bizovac and health resort was built there. In August
the olimpic games of ancient sports is held in Brođanci
where numerous old folk competitions and games can be seen. The
biggest town in the region is Osijek which has origins from 17th
and 18th century when Upper and Down Town and castle were built.
At location of present Slavonski Brod, there was a village in
Roman times, and modern part of the city was build arround the
castle dating from 15th century. Đakovo has neoromanism chatedral
and is very famous by its mass wines. In the neighbouring Vaplovo
the remnants of the early middle ages sculputures were found.
Vinkovci developed on the location of ancient Roman colony
Cibalae. The complete area of Vinkovci is full of historical
findings, specialy the ones dating from Middle Ages. The folk
festival called Vinkovci fall is held every year. Vukovar is a
town located on the banks of Danube and is very significant
finding from pre historical period. After 18th century the history
of town is marked by aristocratic and civil culture. The far East
city of Croatia is Ilok. Ilok has Franciscan monestary and baroque
castle situated in idilic landscape. The town is famous by its
qualitative wines. |
