Gorski Kotar and Lika are two regions which
link continental Croatia with its coastal part. This region is
full of natural beauties, and human culture is so connected to
landscape that the beauty of it takes a breath away. The town Fužine,
located nearby the Coast was developed by migration of people from
neighbouring regions during the restless times. Even today a few
different dialects of Croatian language can be heard here. In July
there is a festival in honor of patron of town, Saint Ante.Close
by is the National park Risnjak.
Lokve is a town situated on the lake coast,
and its countryside is famous by huge number of frogs, as well as
by natural park Golubinjak wood. Traditionaly, there is sculptural
workshop held each summer in Lokve.
On the way to the coast there are Delnice and
Skrad, two towns surrounded by ancinet woods where the remnants
from the pre historic periods were found. Ogulin is in the far
East and the biggest town in Gorski Kotar, and is placed on the
banks of river Dobra. It developed arround citadel. There are two
lakes made on rivers Dobra and Mrežnica – Sabljaci and Bukovik,
beautiful and romantic places, ideal for those who like fishing.
Part of river Dobra toward Lešće, has excellant conditions for
rafting.
South from Ogulin there are the ruins of
fortified town Modruša, which has its own printing house in
15 th century.
In the North part of Gorski Kotar there is
miraculous small town Čabar, situated in the greenness of woods
and river.
On the way to the Coast there is also Lika,
which was inhabited by Illyrian in the prehistoric time, and many
discovered remnatns testifiy their presence here. The whole area
of Lika is full of hills and dense woods. The most beautiful
sample of natural beauty is surely the Plitvice Lakes.
The biggest town in Lika is Gospić. In its surrounding there are
remnants of prehistoric tombs, Roman fortifications and Middle age
forts. Not far from Gospić is Smiljan, place where Nikola Tesla
was born., famous inventor. |
