Biokovo,
a mountain along the central part of the Dalmatian coast. It
descends towards the sea in very steep and bare limestone rocks,
under which is a narrow and green littoral belt. Major peaks
include: Sveti Ilija (1,640m), Šibenik (1,314m), Štropac
(1,145m), Vršac (1,411m), Sinjal (1,333m). Only a couple of
trails for people and animals lead along the limestone cliffs.
Water resources are limited. Permanent and temporary water sources
appear on the point of contact between limestone rocks and the
green coastal zone. Coastal settlements developed in the 19th
century (Makarska, Baška Voda) and play an important role in
traffic and trade. In recent times Biokovo became an attractive
destination for tourists due to the natural beauty of the
landscape.
The
Biokovo Botanical Garden, Kotišina has been established
1984 as a horticultural monument aimed at nature conservation.
There
are several mountain lodges on Biokovo. |
