MEDVEDNICA
" To Sljeme,
to Sljeme…" intones a jovial mountaineer's song.
Medvednica, a high forested peak above Zagreb is a protected
natural park with miles of hiking paths.The largest ski center in
Croatia is located at the peak of Sljeme. MEDVEDGRAD, a 750
year-old royal fortress, is a symbol of Croatia's survival and its
struggle for freedom.VETERNICA CAVERN, in addition to displaying
the fascinating subterranean world, also preserves traces of the
first Zagreb residents, Neanderthals, 42.000 years ago.
SAMOBOR
A town with the
best selection of traditional restaurants and spots for outings,
lies at the foot of the celebrated peaks of the " hiker's
paradise, " the Samobor Hills. It is known for its carnivals,
high-quality wines, cured meat specialties and delicious custard
pastries.The idyllic atmosphere of the ancient churches and family
homes under the ruins of the Old town make Samobor a pearl of the
Zagreb region's tourism. Driving down the old Karlovac road, we
come to a region of vineyards and wine cellars on the gentle
slopes of the Plešivica Hills.
JASTREBARSKO
A city that
developed around the ancient vineyards and palace of the Erdödy
counts, is starting point of the Wine Road that leads to the
renowned wine cellars and vacation spots. CRNA MLAKA, a marshy
forest with spacious fisheries, is a preserve that protects many
endangered species of marsh birds. KRAŠIĆ is a charming village
in the Kupčina river valley. It is visited by many devout
Catholics who honor the memory of Cardinal Stepinac, a native of
the village. PRIBIĆ, the Door to Žumberak, with the fairy-tale
atmosphere of its sleeping castle and church on an islet in a
small lake and its old rural cottages squeezed around the bridge
over a clear stream, provides a preview of the beauty of this
region in which it seems as though time has stopped.
ŽUMBERAK
It is a spacious,
sparsely populated mountainous region in which ancient rural
architecture and customs have been preserved. A particular
attraction is its untouched natural beauty with a number of rare
plants and flowers, as well as crystal-clear, unpolluted mountain
streams. OZALJ, the old castle that was once home to the Babonić,
Zrinski and Frankopan knights, inspires awe with its location high
above the waters of the Kupa River. This river's unusually warm
temperatures and jewel-like waterfalls attract many bathers.

upon their Croatian homeland!"
